Roopkund Trek


Roopkund is the Trek of Myths and Mysteries.

Roopkund is a famous Glacial Lake with hundereds of Skeltons lying across the lake. Trek to Roopkund is at the top when comes to the conversation between the adventurous trekkers. This is one of the most famous and extra special Trek located in Nanda Devi National Park in the Gharwal region of Himalayan ranges of Uttarakhand/Uttaranchal. Roopkund sits down quietly at the laps of the Trishul Massif at an altitude of almost 16,500 feet.

Trek to Roopkund starts from a small village Lohajung which is situated at an altitude of 7,715 feet. The trek to Roopkund passes through the dense forests and some of the most famous Meadows like Ali Bugyal (Largest Meadow in Asia) and Bedini Bugyal. Trekking on the trail of Roopkund gives the trekkers a chance to trek across the dense forests, over the tree line on the green meadows and finally at the altitudes with no vegitation when approaching the summit. 

This is the trek, which is also been trekked by some of the professionsls from National geographic, a documentary titled – Riddles of the Dead – The Skeleton Lake is been published, years ago.


Day 1: Drive from Kathgodam to Lohajung (220 KM)

After you arrive in Kathgodam, our representative will pick you up from station and proceed towards Loharjung. From Kathgodam, you will travel through the scenic hilly routes in order to reach your destination. On the way we will pass across some famous places like Kausani, Baijnath. By the evening reach Lohajung and check-in to the guest house. Beforet he dinner, we will do a group briefing about the Trek and all the Do's and Dont's while on this trek. Have a good night sleep as tomorrow onwards the most awaited trek of your's will be starting.  


Day 2: Trek from Lohajung to Didna Village (8.5 KM)

Post breakfast we will start our trek towards Didna village. We will start our trek through a picturesque forest comprising Himalayan Cedar and Oak trees. This trail is a combination of steep ascents and descents. The trail through lovely oak and rhododendron forests is a pleasure for the eyes. We will reach Didna Village by the afternoon for lunch. After Lunch explore the remote yet beautiful village. The stay at Didna will be in a Homestay with understanding of local culture and having local food. After an early dinner we will call of the day.


Day 3: Trek from Didna Village to Bedini Bugyal (13 KM)

After having early breakfast breakfast in the morning, we will start our trek towards Bedini Bugyal. Today's trek is very strenuous yet most delightful with some of the best views of the Uttarakhand Himalayas. The trek today will start through thick forests and enters into the first Meadow of the day Ali Bugyal. We will have our pack lunch at Ali Bugyal and after taking some rest over this magnificent grassland, we will start our trek towards Bedini Bugyal. Walking over the high altitude green Meadow with complete tree line below is one of a kind experience. By the evening we will reach to the second Meadow of the day, the Bedini Bugyal. Bedini Bugyal offers breathtaking view of Trishul Peak and Nandaghunti peaks, which you cannot resisit capturing in your camera. Our camp will be set over the Bedni Bugyal. Explore this breathtaking grassland and dissolve in its hypnotizing beauty. After having an early dinner, we will call off the day. 


Day 4: Trek from Bedini Bugyal to Patarnachuni (5 KM)

We start our day by 8:00 AM as today's trek is of a short distance which starts with a steep climb followed by a gradual descent to Patarnachuni. The trek will take around 4 hours to complete and by the lunch we will be reaching to Patarnachuni. On a clear day, the view from this trail is very beautiful, one can see the Greater Himalayan ranges from Patanachuni. We will camp at PatarNachauni for the night.


Day 5: Trek from Patarnachuni to Bhagwabasa (5 KM)

Today the trek starts off with a walk, followed by a steep ascent to Kalu Vinayak Temple and then a gradual descent to Bhagwabhasa. The oxygen level in the air goes down as you climb uphill by the minute, so ascend as slow as possible, to acclimatize better. Just as we finish the climb from Ghora Lotani, we’ll reach Kalu Vinayak Temple, where there’s a shrine of Lord Ganesh. Bhagwabhasa is 2 km from here, following an easy, gradual descent. There will be snow on this trail. We will reach Bhagwabhasa and camp there. The nights get tremendously cold and windy so it’s better if you keep warm clothes in handy. Bhagwabasa is the base camp for the Roopkund Summit.


Day 6: Baghwabasa to Roopkund Summit and return back to Bedni Bugyal (16 KM)

Today is the summit day for Ropkund. We start the day early at around 4:00 am. We trek uphill for 5 km towards Roopkund, the trek to the summit will take  around 3 hours to. Roopkund is at 16,000 feet, we need to climb down 250 feet to reach the edge of the lake. If weather permits, we will trek till Junargali which is another 500 ft above Roopkund. After spending some time at Roopkund, we will start our trek back to Bhagwabasa. We will have early lunch at the campsite, and start the trek towards Bedini Bugyal via Patarnachuni. By late afternoon we will reach Bedini Bugyal.


Day 7: Bedni Bugyal to Lohajung via Wan village (14 KM)

After having our breakfast, we start our trek to Wan village which will take around 5 hours. The trek is via the meadows of Bedni Bugyal and then by the dense forests and very steep descent over the bootom of the hill to river Neel Ganga. On the way, we will stop to take in the view at Ghairoli Patal, from where we will get astounding views of Mt. Trishul. From Neel Ganga, it is around 45 mins uphill trek to reach Wan village. We will board our vehicle at Wan and drive towards Lohajung after successful Roopkund trek. The drive to Lohajung will take around 30 min.


Day 8: Drive from Lohajung to Kathgodam (220 KM)

Early morning after breakfast, drive back to the rail head of Kathgodam. You are expected to reach Kathgodam by 6:00 pm in the evening,

• Transport from Kathgodam to Lohajung and Back to Kathgodam

• Camping Equipments, Tents, Kitchen Tents, Toilet Tents, SLeeping Bags, Sleeping Mats

• High Calorie Meals on each day (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) 

• Experienced and Qualified Trek Guide, Trek Leaders, Cook, Helper

• First Aid with supplimental oxygen and Oximeter  

• Forest Entry Permits and Camping Chrges 

• Free Tantra Tshirts

• Porters to carry personal equipments

• Meals during transit (While driving from Kathgodam to Lohajung and back)

I am the individual registering for this programme and hereby agree to the following:


  1. I understand that if a change in my health or physical condition does occur which might affect my ability to participate in the Program or otherwise exercise safely, that I will immediately notify Tantra AdventureZ.
  2. I agree that Tantra AdventureZ shall not be liable or responsible for any injuries to me resulting from my participation in the event and I expressly release and discharge Tantra AdventureZ, its owners, employees, agents and/or assigns, from all claims, actions, judgments and the like which I or my heirs, executors, administrators or assigns may have or claim to have as a result of any injury or other damage which may occur in connection with my participation in the event.
  3. I understand that whenever I will feel light headed, faint, dizzy, nauseated or experience pain/discomfort during the camp, I will stop the activity and inform the Event Leader of Tantra AdventureZ.
  4. I understand that I am not obligated to perform nor participate in any activity that I do not wish to do, and that is my right to refuse such participation at any time.
  5. I am aware that Tantra AdventureZ does not allow & entertain the consumption of Drugs & Alcohol during the complete activity. If I am found indulging in any such activity, then Tantra AdventureZ has the right to disqualify my participation from the Adventure Activity with immediate effect.
  6. I acknowledge that trainers of Tantra AdventureZ. are not physicians and are not trained in any way to provide medical diagnosis, medical treatment, or any other type of medical advice. Furthermore I am aware that it is always advisable to consult a physician before embarking on any new adventure activity.
  7. In the event of my suffering any medical or health difficulty whilst performing any physical activity, and particularly where I may lose consciousness or be unable to deal with matters myself, I hereby authorize Tantra AdventureZ. to contact a physician and to take me to such physician and/or any appropriate medical clinic or other hospital and to use the services of an ambulance where appropriate and I undertake liability for all costs thereby incurred. I am aware of all inherent dangers during the trip. I acknowledge and understand I will be engaging in activities that involve risk of serious injury, including permanent disability or death and  severe social and economic losses which might result not only from my own action, inaction or negligence, but action, inaction or negligence of others, or the condition of the premises on or off site or of any equipment used and further, that there may be other unknown risks not reasonably foreseeable at this time. I assume all these risks and expressly waive, release, discharge and agree not to sue Tantra AdventureZ. for any loss, damage, death, disability, injury, or action of any kind for participating in this camp or any other activities organized by Tantra AdventureZ. and I hereby indemnify and hold Tantra AdventureZ. harmless against any claims by my dependents or other third parties whatsoever arising by reason of my death, disability or injury whilst participating in Adventure Activity.
  8. I am aware that Tantra AdventureZ does not accept responsibility for any loss, theft and/or damage to vehicles and/or personal property left in vehicles or any other area at the location I am camping.
  9. I understand and accept that no refunds, whether in whole or in part, will be granted if I cannot complete the activity. I have read, understand and accept the terms and conditions above.
  10. I notify that I do not have any Criminal Cases/Police Cases running against me.
  11. I agree that this constitutes the entire agreement between me and Tantra AdventureZ. and I acknowledge that I conclude this Agreement of my own free will without force or coercion and not having been induced to do so by reason of any representations on the part of Tantra AdventureZ. and any agreement to terminate this Agreement or to amend or vary it in any way, shall not be of any force or effect unless and until reduced  to writing and signed by the relevant parties
  12. There will be no Refunds in case of Alteration/Cancellaton of the Trip because of any uncertain cause like Landslides, Road Blockage, Vehicle Breakdown, Bad Weather, Any Sudden Government Circular or Notice, Sudden Closer of The Trek Routes or any other similar reason which may-not be under Tantra Adventurez’s control.

1. What is Roopkund and where is it Located ?

- Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake in the Uttarakhand Himalayas.It is  situated in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand.

2. What is the best time to go to Roopkund ?

- Roopkund trek is done only for 4 months throughout the year. If you want to experience snow and do on high difficulty then May and June are the best months for this trek. If you want to see skeltons and do the trek in slightly easy way then September and October are the best months for this trek.

3. From where does the trek starts and How difficult is this trek?

- Trek to Roopkund starts from a small village called Lohajung. THe trek to Roopkund is of Difficult gradient and in May and June the trek is the most difficult in level. Due to unpredictable weather in the higher altitudes sometimes the trek becomes challenging.

4. What kind of fitness level is required for this trek ?

- Roopkund trek require good fitness level, and anyone planning for this trek should start with normal cardio exercise at least 1 month prioor to trek start.

5. Do i need to worry about altitude sickness ?

- As we will trekking mostly in the higher altitudes above the tree line, altitude sickness can be a problem. Our team carries complete first aid kit along with supplimetal oxygen and oximeter to take each day's oxygen level reading. However, it is always advisable to keep your body hydrated by drinking atleast 5-6 ltrs of water everyday.

6. How will we travel from Kathgodam to Lohajung, and is my transport cost included in the trek cost ?

- The complete group will travel together from Kathgodam to Lohajung and back by a sumo/bolero. The transport cost from Kathgodam to Lohajung and back to Kathgodam is included in the Trek cost.

7. What is the group size for this Trek ?

- The group sizes varies from 8-12 people per group.

8. What is the trekking distance on each day ?

The trekking distance varies on each day. On an average we will be trekking around 8 - 10 KM. THe average time taken will be around 5-6 Hrs on each Day. The trek on each day passes through some of the best meadows and views of the HImalayan Ranges.

9. Do i require Trekking Shoes for this trek ?

- Yes, good trekking shoes are recommended for this trek. 

10. What type of accommodation will be provided on each day ?

- The accommodation on each day will be in Dome Tents. Complete camping equipments are carried along with the group on each day.

11. How are the sanitation facilities in the camping sites ?

- We pitch toilet tents in each camping site.

12. What kind of food will we get while on trek ?

- We proide with High Nutrition food to all the trekkers. Our Food Menu consists of Veg//Egg meals.

13. What kind of clothing i require for this trek and what all things i need to carry for this trek ?

14. Can i get a porter to carry my Bag ?

- You can get a porter to carry your bag, there is per day fee assosciated with it which we will let you know at Lohajung.
