Bhrigu Lake Trek

Aren’t those parties A-M-A-Z-ING where your plate is full of all colourful delicacies and you hunt down for a little more space to add that extra sweet? Well, that is exactly what trekking up to Bhrigu Lake is like. Trek to Bhrigu Lake is a plateful experience. Shades of meadow, check; horses galloping and sheep grazing making for a wonderful capture, check; unadulterated snow bed, check; whopping height of 14,100ft, check; luminescent Bhrigu Lake, check; utterly tall snow capped mountain ranges reaching for horizon in the background, check; and to top it all the blissfulness the trek offers.

Manali bags another trophy in the name of Bhrigu Lake, situated right in its lap and marks for a trek not only loved by nature admirers but also the adventure junkies. One gets to witness the unending vastness of alpine meadows which changes its texture and shades as we ascend. With gradual climbing, it’s a stumbling experience to watch the thick forest of rhododeron ending and birch trees rising making for uncanny scenery. The mystical glacial lake too is no less. From being partially frozen at times, to skyline silver the other and reflecting the exact hue of the sky; the different traits of lake has never offered for the same picture. The Pir Pinjal and Dhauladhar ranges in the backdrop all the way through the trek stuns with its panorama.

Many trek to Bhrigu Lake to hunt down the treasure well hidden between two high altitude ridges, while some for the scenic trail of silver oak and cedar trees. May the reason be what so ever, the trek has always been a delight to newcomers and also to those who have walked this path before.

Day 1: Delhi to Manali by Overnight Volvo

Every journey marks a start point, though it is miles away, the capital city is a great juncture to meet up. We keep scaling to higher feet to make our way to one of the famous hub in Himachal Pradesh, Manali. The excitement to start the trek and the smooth road will easily pass our time from Delhi to Manali.

Day 2: Explore Manali

Though it is a long journey to Manali, the excitement and zeal in abundance is surely going to keep us on our toes. Manali has a lot to offer to all its visitors. From strolling around the Mall Road, to visiting Hadimba Temple, or relaxing in one of the cafes by Beas River or shopping for woollen from Old Manali. Manali has it all for spending a leisure time. One can either hit the city and explore or prepare for the onward march to Bhrigu Lake starting tomorrow.

Day 3: Drive from Manali to Gulaba (8,350ft) and trek to Rola Kholi (9,500ft)

The Bhrigu Lake trek begins at Gulaba. Once a quiet hamlet is now buzzing with many tourists. Being a transit point for the famous Rohtang Pass and also trekkers, at a height of 8,350ft Gulaba offers a view of the large meadows which we soon be marching on. We drive to Gulaba and start our trek to Rola Kholi. With moderate ascent on our way, we make our way through deep forests of alpine, cedar and white oak trees to reach the undulating meadows. The vast meadow opens a window to the tall mountains of Dhauladhar Range and we get a peek of Hanuman Tibba peak. With waves of greenery around and a water stream running across, Rola Khuli makes for an ideal campsite. The days offer large grassland where horses and sheep glitter over them while the nights have a vast open sky with a bed of stars twinkling every now and then. We sleep through the night for our finally ascend to Bhrigu Lake.

Day 4: Trek from Rola Kholi to Bhrigu and trek to Panduropa (11,480ft)

We start our trek at a height of 9,500ft and make our way through stony trails to reach a little closer to the surreal lake. As we ascend, the view of the Solang Valley gets clearer and more stunning. Slowly and gradually the landscape changes from complete greenery to whiteness. There is snow all around marking the presence of Bhrigu Lake somewhere in proximity. Final decent through the snowy trail and the mystical lake shows up. If myths are to be believed, Rishi Bhrigu meditated here and bathed in the lake. After spending time by the lake we slip our way through ice to descend to Panduropa. We get back to the meadows but this time with an entirely new backdrop and new peaks towering behind. If someone missed star gazing the previous night, at a height of 11,480ft Paduropa offers a even clearer and closer view of the twinkles and the mighty Milky Way galaxy. We camp through the night at Panduropa.

Day 5: Trek from Panduropa to Vashisht (6,800ft), Overnight Volvo to Delhi

If someone missed filling their memory cards with the spectacular view of the Himalayas, trek down to Vashisht gives a last opportunity to be up and away from the city hustle bustle and the closest ever to the nature. Trekking down through wavy meadows and forests we reach Vashisht. We drive all the way back to Manali from Vashisht and proceed to board our bus to Delhi. Surely the trek to Bhrigu Lake and back leaves for an astounding experience to keep forever in our memories.
